Our definition

How we count countries, territories and visits — and why.

How many countries are there?

We use the 193 member states of the United Nations as our baseline. This is the most widely recognised, neutral and stable definition of sovereign countries.

We are inspired by the Danish Travellers Club and their long tradition of defining and tracking countries and territories — but the 193.dk definition is our own.

What counts as a visit?

Overnight — You have spent at least one night in the country. This is the standard that counts towards your total.
Transit — You have passed through the country without sleeping there. This is recorded separately and does not count towards your total.

This is a gentleman's rule. You register yourself and stand accountable for what you record. There is no verification — and no judgement.

Territories

Beyond the 193 countries, we track 76 territories — regions with distinct political status, separate entry requirements, or recognised by the Danish Travellers Club as separate destinations. Territories can be registered with the same overnight/transit distinction and are shown separately on your profile.
